Create Your Own Sustainable Christmas Garland – The Perfect Christmas DIY Project
Bring the Magic of Christmas to Life with Your Own Handmade Garland
If you love getting creative at Christmas, our DIY Garland Kit is the perfect festive project. Whether you’re decorating your mantelpiece, staircase, or table, this beautiful 1m design will bring a touch of sustainable luxury to your home.
In this guide, I’ll walk you through each step, sharing a few top tips we use in our professional workshops. And if you’re more of a visual learner, head over to my YouTube Channel to watch the full step-by-step video (including how to wire accessories like dried fruit and pinecones!).
Step-by-Step: How to Make Your Christmas Garland
Step 1. Lay Out Your String
Your garland base is a simple piece of string – a sustainable alternative to floral foam. We’ve provided enough for a 1-metre garland, perfect for a mantle, dresser, or festive table runner. Lay this on your table as you’ll use this as the base for your design.
Step 2. Prep Your Foliage
Unpack your kit and prepare your festive greens. You’ll have a gorgeous mix of spruce, eucalyptus, and ivy.
Cut these into small pieces, around 10–20cm long, and create little piles ready to use.
Step 3. Start Wrapping
Take a small bundle of mixed foliage. Hold it against your string, then use the florist’s wire provided to wrap it tightly around the stems and string a few times to secure.
Make a second bundle, and this time, overlap it halfway down the first one so there’s no gap. Keep wrapping and overlapping as you go – this gives your garland that lovely full, layered look.
Step 4. Keep Going!
Continue adding and overlapping your foliage bundles along the full length of your string.
When you reach the end, position your final bundle so it faces the opposite direction. This hides the ends of your stems and gives your garland a neat, professional finish.
TOP TIP: Tuck a few short sprigs of spruce into any visible wire – the needles are perfect for disguising mechanics.
Step 5. Add Your Finishing Touches
Now for the fun bit! You can keep your garland natural and green, or add some extra touches.
We love adding dried fruit, pinecones, and cinnamon sticks, so we’ve included these in your kit.
Watch my YouTube tutorial here to see exactly how to wire and attach accessories like orange slices and pinecones.
Display & Enjoy
Once finished, your garland is ready to hang! You can add little loops of wire by twisting little circles and and attaching to either end of your string to hang, or style it along your mantle, drape it over your staircase, or lay it down the centre of your dining table for a festive focal point that smells as good as it looks.
