How to design a Sustainable, Foam-Free Christmas Centrepiece – Watch Me Make It Step by Step

A Natural and Beautiful Way to Style Your Christmas Table

There’s something truly special about taking time to create something with your own hands for Christmas. This year, I wanted to share a design that’s full of texture, fragrance and natural beauty - a Scandi inspired, sustainable, foam free Christmas table arrangement that’s simple to make and effortlessly elegant.

Recently, I spent the most wonderful day collaborating with my old friend Kelly from Boho Luxe Weddings and the lovely Meg from Fox Moon Photography to create and photograph this design for Kelly’s blog. Three women, lots of creativity, and plenty of laughter, it was such a joy to spend the day sharing ideas and supporting one another.

In this post, I’ll show you how to make your own version and you can also watch the full process in my YouTube video below.

Click play to see the full step-by-step tutorial where I demonstrate exactly how to create this long lasting, foam free festive design. You’ll see how to build structure, layer textures, and style your table for that relaxed Boho Luxe Christmas look.

In this tutorial, you’ll learn:

  • How to create a foam free floral design using chicken wire

  • Which seasonal foliage and dried materials work best together

  • How to style your arrangement for a Scandi inspired Christmas table

  • Tips for keeping your flowers fresh and long lasting

What You’ll Need

Before you start, gather your materials. I’ve chosen a mix of fragrant evergreens and soft, natural textures that reflect the Scandi inspired Boho Luxe look perfectly.

Materials List:

  • Waterproof container

  • Chicken wire (to create a reusable base)

  • String or florist scissors

  • 2 stems hydrangea

  • 5 stems birch

  • 3 stems pussy willow

  • 3 stems yew

  • 2 stems cypress fir

  • 3–4 stems ivy

  • Decorative items such as pine cones, dried fruit, seed pods or cinnamon sticks

Step by Step Guide

1. Create your base
Place chicken wire inside your waterproof container. This will hold your stems in place and is a wonderful eco friendly alternative to floral foam.

2. Build your shape
Start with your greenery to create a soft, meadowy outline. Yew makes a lovely traditional Christmas base and gives your design that rich evergreen scent.

3. Add height and texture
Insert birch and pussy willow to add height and structure. These stems give your arrangement a relaxed, natural silhouette that feels both Scandi inspired and timeless.

4. Add contrast
Layer in Cupressus and trailing ivy to soften the shape and add movement. I love how ivy drapes gently, adding that effortless Boho Luxe flow.

5. Add statement blooms and details
Place your hydrangeas opposite each other to create balance. Then add your chosen decorative accents — pine cones, seed pods, dried fruit or cinnamon sticks all work beautifully to bring warmth and a festive scent.

6. Style your table
Set your arrangement in the centre of your table. Surround it with candles in neutral tones, ribbon tied napkins and natural textures for a relaxed yet luxurious look.

Why Foam Free Floral Design Matters

Choosing foam free floral design is one of the simplest ways to make your festive styling more sustainable and we always use this method in our workshops. Floral foam isn’t biodegradable, but chicken wire can be reused again and again. It also helps your flowers last longer by allowing better airflow to the stems. Small changes like this make a big difference — and your arrangement will still look just as luxurious and festive.

The Inspiration

This design was inspired by Scandi simplicity and Boho Luxe elegance. It’s full of fragrant evergreens, rich textures and natural materials — the perfect combination for a sustainable Christmas table that feels both relaxed and refined.
